Britney Spears fans are concerned for the singer yet again after she was arrested in California for allegedly driving under the influence.
This isn't the first time the Grammy-winning pop star, 44, has sparked mixed reactions from fans, including worry. And while therapists say these reactions are normal and to be expected, there are more appropriate ways to share concern about someone, especially one you've never met.
"Because we are caring, empathic humans, we're going to be concerned about someone − and that's OK," psychotherapist Stephanie Sarkis previously told USA TODAY. "When you are observing someone from a distance in that type of scenario, people can feel helpless, like they want to be able to help, but they don't know how."
Previously, Spears' social media posts, like one in which she appeared to dance with knives, also had fans talking. Some fans also feel particularly protective over the star due to the legal battle to free her from her conservatorship, which kicked off the #FreeBritney movement. But it's important to remember that Spears' mental health has long been a topic of deep, and oftentimes inappropriate, scrutiny and speculation.
Because mental health remains such a sensitive subject − and also because you really can't make assumptions about what anyone else is going through − it's important to focus your comments more on your own experience rather than someone else's.
"What I would suggest to people when they're seeing something like this happen is to talk about yourself, talk about your feelings, your response to what's going on and happening," relationship therapist Philip Lewis previously told USA TODAY. "That's what really needs to be heard."

Plus, our feelings about a celebrity oftentimes say more about us than they do about the famous person, Sarkis added. For example, Spears' challenges may remind them of instances in their lives when they struggled with their mental health or dealt with a loved one in a similar situation.
"It's a really good opportunity to look at the self and look at, 'What have I been through that I connect or identify with this?' " Sarkis said. "Something as simple as, you feel like you aren't fitting in, that you feel like society isn't accepting of you."
And it's not just Spears' supporters who could benefit from that kind of reflection. The trolls and keyboard warriors should take a good, hard look in the mirror, too, Lewis said.
"I would say the same thing to them," Lewis said. "What is it that's happening for you that brings you to react in this way, and is there some way that you can be more compassionate and more empathetic?"
In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, a representative for Spears said, in part, "hopefully, she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time."
"Her boys are going to be spending time with her. Her loved ones are going to come up with an overdue needed plan to set her up for success for well-being," the spokesperson added.
