Buckingham Palace Announces Future Plans for King Charles’s 18-Year-Old Nephew

James, Earl of Wessex, is heading to Royal Agricultural University in Cirencester, Gloucestershire.

The school is located near King Charles’ country residence, Highgrove House.

He will study Rural Land & Property Management to prepare for a career focused on the countryside and land stewardship.

The 18-year-old nephew of King Charles will attend Royal Agricultural University in Cirencester, Gloucestershire, Buckingham Palace confirmed to People.

The outlet noted that the teenager had earned the necessary grades from his A-level exams to continue his education.

The school is located near King Charles’s country residence, Highgrove House, where Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, and their two kids recently visited. James will study Rural Land & Property Management to prepare for a career focused on the countryside and land stewardship. He also won’t be taking a gap year.

“He will head straight there without taking a year out,” a Buckingham Palace spokesperson said.

James is the son of the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Edward, who is King Charles’s younger brother. Edward was previously known as the Earl of Wessex until 2023. The title now, however, belongs to his son, who was previously known as Viscount Severn.

In a 2020 interview with The Times, James’s mother, Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, offered rare insight into her children’s lives. She and Edward also share a 22-year-old daughter, Lady Louise.

When asked how she tries to give her kids a “normal” life, she replied, “What’s normal? They go to a regular school [they both attend top independent schools]. They go to friends for sleepovers and parties. At weekends we do lots of dog walking and stay with friends.”

She continued, “I guess not everyone’s grandparents live in a castle, but where you are going is not the important part, or who they are. When they are with the Queen, she is their grandmother.”

Sophie also noted that her children would not use HRH (His/Her Royal Highness) titles, which Buckingham Palace seemingly confirmed with their recent announcement.

“We try to bring them up with the understanding they are very likely to have to work for a living,” she added. “Hence we made the decision not to use HRH titles. They have them and can decide to use them from 18, but I think it’s highly unlikely.”
