NEW YORK – Emily Charlton has always been the acid-tongued heart of “The Devil Wears Prada.”
Played with blistering sarcasm by Emily Blunt, the high-strung Runway magazine assistant had many of the most crackling one-liners in the original 2006 film. (“I'm sorry, do you have some prior commitment? Some hideous skirt convention you have to go to?”)
The Type-A character loses none of her bite in “The Devil Wears Prada 2” (in theaters May 1), with a plethora of caustic new jokes that are bound to enter the pop culture lexicon, some of which Blunt, 43, improvised herself along with new co-star Justin Theroux.
“ ‘May the bridges I burn light my way’ is mine, which is the most dreadful affirmation one could say to create an outlook for life,” Blunt says with a laugh, seated with castmate Stanley Tucci, who returns as faithful art director Nigel Kipling in the sequel.

Emily Charlton (Emily Blunt) is just as quotable as ever in "The Devil Wears Prada 2."
“But they did let us mess around so much,” Blunt adds. “Justin Theroux and I were given free rein, which is probably a bad mistake.”
“There’s a whole other movie there,” Tucci, 65, says.
“An unusable movie,” Blunt jokes. “A career-ending movie! Unwatchable.”
Who does Justin Theroux play in 'The Devil Wears Prada 2?'
Justin Theroux walks the red carpet at the New York premiere of "The Devil Wears Prada 2" on April 20.
When we pick up with the characters in “Prada 2,” Emily has left Nigel and bristly boss Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep) at Runway, and is now a high-powered executive at Dior. We soon learn that she is dating a daffy billionaire named Benji Barnes (Theroux), who raises eyebrows with his sharply receding hairline and bumbling lack of social grace.
Blunt previously costarred with Theroux, 54, in 2016's "The Girl on the Train," but originally befriended him through her husband, John Krasinski, whom she married in 2010.

Stanley Tucci, left, and Emily Blunt attend "The Devil Wears Prada 2" premiere in London on April 22.
"I'm not sure that Justin has ever seen himself this way," Blunt says. "I think he was horrified the first time Benji was fully put together with the hairpiece that they gave him. It was just a horror show. But I adore him. He's been a friend of mine since the moment I met my husband. Justin was one of the first people I met through John, and he's always just been such an important part of our life.
"So it was wild for him to play my demented billionaire boyfriend," she says. "It was so fabulous, I loved it."

Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Stanley Tucci and Emily Blunt stepped out on April 22, 2026, to celebrate "The Devil Wears Prada 2" at the film's European premiere in London. See their red carpet looks.
To say that Blunt and Tucci are also extremely close would be an understatement: The Oscar-nominated actors bonded on the set of the first "Devil Wears Prada." Tucci met Blunt's sister, literary agent Felicity Blunt, at the film's 2006 premiere, and they later reconnected at Blunt and Krasinski's wedding. They started dating and he eventually married Felicity, 45, in 2012.
Although Tucci was born in New York, he is strongly connected to his family's Italian roots: He is fluent in the language, and even hosts a food and travel show on National Geographic, "Tucci in Italy."
So when it came time to film "Prada 2" in Milan, Tucci was more than happy to help his sister-in-law, who has a full conversation in Italian with a famous designer we won't spoil.
"I was like, 'Stan, can you record it phonetically for me?' " Blunt recalls of preparing for the scene. "He recorded it at the speed of light, and I went literally syllable by syllable. So Stanley's the reason I was able to [do it]."
"You did it brilliantly," Tucci reassures her with a smile.
"Oh, God," Blunt deadpans. "I think I had one take where I did it well. That was it! And then I did say, 'Cazzo!' in front of all of the extras in Italy. They cheered; they loved it." (For the record: The English translation is too saucy to publish.)
Tucci rates her mastery of the language very highly.
"Excellent," Tucci says with a wink. "It's the only way we converse now."
