In the latest episode of In the City, Kenny Martin reunites with his father, Larry, after 25 years apart

Ahead of the episode, Kenny spoke exclusively to PEOPLE about their emotional reunion

He revealed that since their reconciliation in the fall, they speak once a week, and he was able to give his dad a call for Father's Day

In the Citystar Kenny Martin is opening up about the "life-changing" experience of searching for his estranged father.

During the June 23 episode of Bravo's Summer House spinoff, Martin successfully tracked down his father, Larry Martin, after 25 years apart. With help from a private investigator, Kenny and his girlfriend, Whitney Fransway, found information about Larry's wife, Debbie, and scheduled a time to reconnect.

The venture capitalist spoke exclusively with PEOPLE about his decision to document his reconciliation on camera and where they stand today.

"I came into this show saying that I was going to be an open book about grief, my relationship and friendships," he says, noting that he never expected to find his father. "But if I can share it on camera and maybe impact someone else's life or relationship with a family member, then it is so worth it."

At the start of the episode, Kenny calls his father to reintroduce himself and learns that Larry has moved from London to Tampa, Fla., and is married. During their emotional call, Kenny tells him, "I didn't know how you were going to respond. I thought there was a chance I called you and you were like, 'I'm good down here,' " but Larry interrupts to reject that, "Don't you start that, son. I don't ever want you to say that s---. I'm so sorry we lost so many f---ing years.' "

As they both grow more emotional, Kenny invites Larry to visit him in New York City, and then the episode concludes with their reunion. During the touching moment, Kenny reveals that his mother recently passed away after an advanced cancer diagnosis, and Larry tells him he's sorry he wasn't able to be there for Kenny during his time of need.

"I can't bring back the past years, only thing I can do is move forward. Only thing I can sit here and say to you is, any trials and tribulations you have in your life from here on out, I'm there," Larry says. "Regardless, it's unconditional."

Kenny says it was "It was nice to just be able to talk to someone about it that really knew her, even though so much time had gone by. There was this feeling of 'He is my father and he's family.' It was surprising to me how much I felt that support."

Their heartfelt reunion reignited their relationship, Kenny tells PEOPLE, adding that they now speak once a week. He explains that the entire experience was "surreal" and that he "didn't know what to expect."

"I remembered us kind of falling out of touch, but not a big blowup. I didn't have a ton of animosity in my heart when it came to him," he says, but shares that he was still apprehensive and wondered if his father would be welcoming and receptive.

"I actually had to have a glass of wine at 10:00 in the morning just to calm my nerves. I just didn't know what the tone was going to be and I had forgotten how great his energy was," he says. "It was super, super emotional. You don't realize just how much weight is being carried and it broke in that moment. It was a heavy, emotional, but very happy moment."

Later, Larry traveled to N.Y.C., and during the "big moment" of their face-to-face reunion, Kenny "wanted to ditch the cameras and hang with him and just be present."

After the emotional meeting, they spent the rest of the day together and continued to have "a wholesome couple of days."

"We went bowling, I showed him around New York City, we went out to dinner," Kenny shares, adding they had brunch at Sadelle's with Whitney and their costar, Gavin Moseley. "We had a game night where we cooked in with Whit and stayed up playing Rummy 500 for what felt like the whole night. The next day we went to one of my favorite backgammon lounges in the city, played for a while, and just walked around."

"We really got to connect, he got to know Whitney, and it was just really nice, meaningful quality time," he says.

Kenny tells PEOPLE that since that initial meeting, their relationship has continued to evolve. "We're taking it one day at a time, but there's a relationship there," he says.

"We had to figure out what this relationship was going to look like and what we were comfortable with without it feeling forced or uncomfortable or too much or not enough," he says, but they ultimately "settled into a nice flow that felt comfortable for both of us."

"There's someone that I can call and go to, and I'm forever grateful that that is what's come of all this," he says. "I never would've thought in a million years that this is where we would be in talking to him. And if he doesn't hear from me after a week or so, I'll get a text or a call, being like, 'You good? Just, just checking in.'"

Kenny tells PEOPLE that he and Whitney visited Larry and Debbie in Tampa for Thanksgiving. "That really put context behind the life that he's living down there, and it was a really meaningful experience just to meet his crew and be a part of his routine."

Their newfound relationship also allowed Kenny to commemorate Father's Day with Larry. "It was nice to reach out and just have that connectivity."

He says the fan feedback has been a rewarding part of his experience. "I think just being able to share that journey with other people, hopefully, encourages someone else to go reach out to a family member or to try to repair a relationship or just remove some of that weight or energy that's trapped," he says. But notes that each family is different, adding, "If it makes sense for them."

"You don't know what is impacting you unless you really just take your guards down and just be vulnerable and say, 'You know what? This is something I'm gonna explore and I'm just going to put myself  out there,'" he says.

"I think just being open and vulnerable to doing that work is life-changing," he adds. "It was for me."

In the City airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. on Bravo, and is available to stream on Peacock the next day.
