How Risky Is Too Risky for a Wedding Guest Outfit?HBO
This Memorial Day weekend, I have a wedding to attend. Itās in Florida, and Iām good friends with the couple. I have a dress in mind, but hereās the thing: Itās cheetah print. Does that make it inappropriate wedding attire? The jury is out (the jury being the three friends/coworkers Iāve polled), but after watching last nightās Euphoria episode, Iām feeling kind of untouchable. If Maddy and Jules can get away with showing that much skin at Cassie and Nateās wedding, canāt I get away with a little animal print? But thatās a big āif,ā and the question stillstandsāis it actually okay to show skin at a wedding?
For anyone who missed it, Hunter Schaferās character, Jules, wore an asymmetric/nude illusion dress from Acne Studiosā spring 2023 runway. Maddy, played by Alexa Demie, wore a slinky olive-toned number, an original design courtesy of the showās costumer Natasha Newman-Thomas.

Personally, I donāt think thereās a cover-all response to the question. It depends on the couple. Whatās the mood of their wedding? I know someone whose wedding theme is āTry your best to upstage the brideā (a level of confidence Iāll never be able to understand), in which case, I think you could do your worst. But for 99 out of 100 weddings, itās probably not appropriate.
Stylist Liat Baruch tuned in, too, and she had thoughts. For Maddy and Jules, she thought their dresses fit the vibe. But what about in the real world? āI think it depends on the wedding, the host, the attireāall that. I donāt think I can say blanketly, āNo, you can never wear that.āā (In case youāre wondering about credentials, Baruch famously styled Sofia Richie for her wedding.) I asked around the office to get other ELLE fashion editorsā thoughts, too. Hereās what they had to say.
āItās a no from me,ā says Claire Stern Milch, senior digital director. āEyes on the bride.ā

Madison Rexroat, assistant accessories editor, takes a similar stance. āWedding dress codes need to be handled with more etiquette than most events, but Iād approach it as you would a professional event or galaāif you think thereās any risk to what youāre wearing, itās probably best to avoid it. If you wouldnāt wear it around your boss or your grandparents, you probably shouldnāt wear it around other peopleās [grandparents]. There are some instances where you might know thereās a little leeway with the vibe depending on the crowd or the bride, but ultimately itās not about you. If itās going to distract from the bride at all, itās best to avoid the potential drama.ā
āI love a good cutout situation, but respectfully, youāre an extra in someoneās absolute main character dayāand while you have every right to look great, this is not your time to draw attention,ā says Dale Arden Chong, senior fashion commerce editor. āI personally wouldnāt want to get questionable looks from someoneās older relatives, either.ā
I suppose thatās three tallies against my cheetah-print dress, but remember that LBD Kendall Jenner wore to Lauren Perezās wedding? Oh, whatās that you say? āBut Meg, you arenāt Kendall Jennerā? Fine, point taken. I guess Iāll submit and wear something tasteful. How boring.
