Kate Gosselin’s Son Collin Recalls Her Cold 4-Word Response While Visiting Him at a Psychiatric Facility When He Was 12

Collin Gosselin reflected on a painful memory with his mom, Kate Gosselin, when he was just 12.

The 22-year-old alleged in his memoir that Kate had a harsh four-word message for him when she visited him at a mental institution.

Colin claimed that Kate never visited him again at the psychiatric facility.

Collin Gosselin, the son of Jon and Kate Gosselin from Jon & Kate Plus 8, is opening up about his fractured relationship with his mom in his new memoir. In an excerpt from In the Shadow of Eight: Surviving the Reality of My Childhood shared by Page Six, Collin looked back on a painful memory he claims happened when he was 12 years old and staying at a mental health facility.

Collin wrote about a conversation he had with his now-estranged mom during what he says was her one and only visit to the facility that she sent him to in 2016. When he pleaded with his mom to go home, Colin alleges that she said, “You broke our family,” adding, “you are here because of you.”

During a 2025 interview with The Sun, the Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test star previously claimed that Kate sent him to the institution because he refused to appear with her on the Kate Plus 8 reality TV show following his parents’ divorce in 2009.

Collin recalled his mom appearing “disappointed” when she saw him for the first time at the facility, seemingly because she was “horrified” by the weight he had put on during his time there. He recounted the pair sharing a “stiff” hug, and claimed that Kate ignored him when he told her he “missed her.”

After they spoke to a doctor about his progress, Colin wrote that he approached his mom with a “desperate” request to leave the facility and go home. However, Kate allegedly told her son that it “wouldn’t be appropriate” and that his seven siblings were “doing so much better” without him there.

Kate allegedly began talking about the family’s summer plans as well as the cakes she’d gotten the rest of the kids on their shared birthday.

Colin, who also claimed that his mom refused to take origami gifts that he’d made for his seven siblings, wrote that he “started to sob” after hearing the harsh words. After the doctor came back into the room, Kate said she was leaving.

“I don’t remember saying goodbye,” he wrote in the memoir, which was released on October 13. “A nurse escorted me back to the pod. That was the first and last time my mom ever visited me in the institution.”

Kate opened up about her decision to send Collin to a psychiatric facility in a 2023 statement to People, claiming that he is “violent” and she placed him there “for the safety of myself, his brothers and sisters, and for his own well-being.” She also claimed that Collin is “a very troubled young man who continues to need a lot of help.”

Collin’s father, Jon, removed him from the facility in 2018, when he was granted legal and physical custody of his son.
