Kate Middleton channeled Princess Diana through fashion while commemorating Anzac Day.

On Saturday, April 25, the Princess of Wales stepped out solo in London to mark Anzac Day, honoring fallen members of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC), where her outfit drew comparisons to a look once worn by her late mother-in-law.

Princess Kate, 44, wore a navy coat dress by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen (her bridal gown designer) with white lapels and a matching navy Jane Taylor hat, completing the look with a poignant poppy pin, navy pumps by Gianvito Rossi and a mini DeMellier handbag.

Kate's ensemble looked much like an outfit worn by Princess Diana in July 1995.

Thirty years ago, Prince William's mother wore a navy skirt suit with white lapels, cuffs and belt to present new colours to the Light Dragoon Guards Regiment in Bergen-Hohne, Germany, in July 1995.

Princess Diana, who was then the Princess of Wales through her marriage to the future King Charles, topped the look with a coordinating wide-brimmed hat and matching navy pumps with a white stripe.

Diana and Charles divorced in 1996, four years after they separated in 1992, and she died following a car accident in Paris in August 1997 at age 36. Years later, Prince William, 43, proposed to Kate with the sapphire and diamond engagement ring that had belonged to his mom, which Kate continues to wear today.

Princess Kate added shimmer on Saturday by wearing a pair of sapphire and diamond earrings that previously belonged to Diana, which have become a favorite in her rotation in recent years.

Kate sometimes sports looks that remind royal watchers of Diana's iconic style, which fashion director Bethan Holt of The Daily Telegraph previously told PEOPLE is on purpose.

"I think we have seen lots of examples where the reference is very intentional, and I think that Kate uses fashion to pay tribute to Diana in a very positive way," Holt said, adding that William "has always been very conscious of his mother as a style icon."

"I think that William and Kate, between them, might have decided that actually on some occasions it's a really nice thing for Kate to reference the fact that Diana is still a fashion muse today and to do that through her own clothes," she said.

Following Queen Elizabeth's death in 2022, King Charles named William as the new Prince of Wales, bestowing his eldest son with the historic title for the male heir to the throne. Kate became the Princess of Wales in the same sweep, embracing an elevated role in the royal fold and taking on the title that her late mother-in-law was globally known by.

As Princess Kate stepped into that position, a royal source told PEOPLE, "the new Princess of Wales appreciates the history associated with this role but will understandably want to look to the future as she creates her own path."
