Frankie Jonas and Noah Cyrus' new song "High and Sad" is out now

To celebrate the release, Cyrus posted a heartfelt tribute to their friendship on Instagram

Noah Cyrus and Frankie Jonas go way back.

To celebrate the release of their new song, "High and Sad," Cyrus shared a nostalgic Instagram post explaining the roots of their friendship — and why he always made her feel seen.

"i'm already tearing up thinking back on all the memories i've shared with Frankie. it's funny, i've always felt like no one could ever understand my exact life and experiences, the way it feels to be seen as the 'underdog' of a family, but anytime i'd think of Franklin, i knew he was somewhere understanding and sharing those same feelings and moments that only the 2 of us, and very few people, could only understand," Cyrus, 26, began.

She continued, "i met Frankie (Franklin to you, but always Frankie to me) in 2006, 20 years ago, wowwww. instantly we were inseparable, and from that moment forward he was my best friend. i was only 6, but as time went by my feelings for Frankie turned into one of the purest and most innocent loves i have ever felt to this day. man, did i love that little boy."

In her caption, the "July" singer explained that their friendship was never "transactional or exchangeable." Instead, it was "pure, unbreakable, innocent, childlike love" like their characters in the 2008 film Ponyo.

"It was like an animation of our story and how we found each other in some way," she wrote, later adding, "it's a blessing, and something i value heavily, to still have that same person in my life 20 years later—a solid best friend i can always trust. both living our adult lives, much different than the ones we lived before, together as children. each having our own partners, making our own music, and demanding to be no longer an underdog. and Frankie, you never were that to me."

Cyrus concluded her post by writing that she's "so grateful" to Jonas, 25, for having her on the song. "it was great catching up with you, old friend," she wrote. "i love ya forever."

The Instagram post featured photos of them together over the years, including throwbacks of them as kids and photos of them in the studio.

In his own Instagram post, Jonas wrote that it was "a gift to share this song with someone I've shared so much life with."

"Someone who entered my life at a time when we both needed a friend in the most unusual of worlds. Someone who I couldn't be more grateful is in my life today. I cherish you and I cherish our friendship," he continued. "Not only did Noah contribute her beautiful voice to this song but she also contributed her warm and loving heart. I hope you enjoy High and Sad, I am so blessed to have done this with someone so special. Ponyo to my Sosuke ❤️💙"

Weeks prior to the song's release, the pair revealed they got matching tattoos with a nod to their Ponyo characters. Cyrus voiced the English-language dub of the titular character, while Jonas voiced Sōsuke.

They captioned the Instagram post, "ポニョ、宗介が好き," which translates to "Ponyo loves Sosuke" in English.

Despite romance rumors, Cyrus and Jonas have never dated. She opened up about her former feelings toward Jonas while speaking to a commenter on a TikTok video in January and revealed she was "in loooovvveee with frankie" when they were kids.

Cyrus' sister, Miley Cyrus, famously toured with The Jonas Brothers during the 2007–2008 Best of Both Worlds Tour.
