There’s a particular kind of American nostalgia that The Waltons owns outright. It’s not a glossy, theme-park version of the past, but something sturdier, quieter, and rooted in the rhythms of real life.
Week after week, over nine seasons and seven made-for-TV movies — beginning with 1971’s The Homecoming — the show invited viewers into a world where the stakes weren’t resolved with car chases or cliffhangers, but with decency and the occasional kitchen-table reckoning. It was earnest without being naive, sentimental without being maudlin, and somehow managed to make the Great Depression feel like a place you wouldn’t mind visiting for an hour.
As the decades have passed, The Waltons’ legacy has expanded rather than faded. Reunion films, fan conventions, and a steady stream of syndication have kept the Walton family — and its cast — in circulation long after the original goodnights echoed across the airwaves.
Much like the family at the show’s center, the actors have gone their separate ways, but continued to carve out busy, singular careers. They eventually reunited a decade ago for Entertainment Weekly’s 2016 Walton family reunion.
Before EW heads back up Walton’s Mountain, let’s see where the family ended up after the porch lights extinguished.

Richard Thomas (John “John-Boy" Walton Jr.)

Richard Thomas starred as the eldest son, John-Boy, the show’s empathetic moral center who grows from a curious teen with a penchant for writing into a published author.
“Ralph [Waite] and Michael [Learned] were the gatekeepers of honesty of the show,” Thomas said at a 2025 fan event. “Ralph was impatient with anything that was going to be fake, false, reversed the guideline. Michael, same way. They were exemplars of keeping it honest and keeping it real and questioning and making sure that it was right.”
Thomas, who won an Emmy for his performance, left The Waltons in 1977, during the show's fifth season. Robert Wightman later took over the role of John-Boy, though Thomas returned for three of the reunion movies in the 1990s.
The New York native had a busy career on stage, making his Broadway debut at age 7. He found regular work on soap operas in his early years, then scored a starring role in Frank Perry’s coming-of-age classic Last Summer (1969) before The Waltons made him a household name. After leaving the series, he appeared in Roots: The Next Generation (1979) and went on to star in made-for-TV movies for decades, including playing Bill Denbrough in the 1990 adaptation of Stephen King’s IT.
In more recent years, he had a substantial supporting role as an FBI bigwig on the critically acclaimed FX series The Americans and appeared as Laura Linney’s estranged father in the final season of Netflix's Ozark.
The veteran actor and his wife, Georgiana Bischoff, wed in 1994 and share a son. Thomas also became stepfather to her two daughters and has four children — including triplet daughters — from his first marriage.

Ralph Waite (John Walton Sr.)

Ralph Waite played family patriarch John Sr. Over the course of the series, he grows from a struggling Depression-era lumberman working tirelessly to support his family into a pillar of the community, operating the family lumber mill with the help of his sons.
In 2025, costar Michael Learned spoke about the actors’ enduring bond. “I just loved him and he loved me. That was very real and we were also very wise. We didn’t sleep together in real life. We knew that that could just go downhill. So as much as we loved each other, we were just very respectful of the show and who we were and who our characters were. So we just remained dear, dear friends.”
A stage actor who was largely a low-profile supporting player in film and TV until The Waltons raised his profile, Waite already had Cool Hand Luke (1967) and Five Easy Pieces (1970) under his belt and ultimately built a decades-long screen résumé. He appeared in hits like The Bodyguard (1992) and Cliffhanger (1993) and later landed a recurring role on HBO’s cult classic Carnivàle.
In later years, he popped up on Days of Our Lives, Bones, and NCIS, playing the father of Mark Harmon’s Jethro Gibbs. In addition to his acting career, Waite ran unsuccessfully for Congress on three occasions — once in 1990 and twice in 1998.
Waite died of natural causes in 2014 at age 85. He was survived by his third wife, Linda East.

Michael Learned (Olivia Walton)

Michael Learned took on the role of firmly faithful Olivia Walton from Patricia Neal, who originated the character in The Homecoming. Before Ma Walton left Walton's Mountain after the seventh season — with Olivia written out after developing tuberculosis — she served as the family’s tough-but-loving guide. Learned returned for several guest appearances during season 8.
The actress opened up about her decision to leave the show in a 2025 podcast interview, saying it wasn’t a hard choice.
“On the one hand, I wept because we were such a family, even the crew, we were all really close and like a family. But on the other hand, I got tired of [it],” she said. “They didn't know what to do with me. They’d have me ironing and going, ‘And then what happened, kids? And then where did you go? John-Boy, more coffee?’ And things, just to have me in the scene. But as an actor, it was just boring.”
Learned added, however, that she’s “eternally grateful” for The Waltons. “It put my kids through private school,” she said. “But at the time I complained a lot, you know, ‘I want to be home with my kids,’ and here I was with these lovely kids, but they weren't mine.”
The D.C. native is best remembered for her role in The Waltons, which was also her first substantial onscreen role. Because she was relatively unknown at the time — and because of her traditionally masculine first name — she was initially credited as “Miss Michael Learned” to avoid confusion about her gender.
Flash-forward a few years and Learned is tied with Tyne Daly for the most wins ever for the Emmys' Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series award. She won three times for The Waltons and once for 1982’s Nurse.
She has maintained a regular presence on TV over the decades, including guest spots on Murder, She Wrote, Cold Case, Scrubs, and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Her most recent screen role was as Catherine Dahmer on Netflix’s controversial Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.
The veteran actress has three sons with her first husband, actor Peter Donat. She was married to her fourth husband, John Doherty, from 1991 until his death in 2025.

Ellen Corby (Esther Walton)

Tart-tongued but always loving Grandma Walton was memorably played by Ellen Corby. She was nominated for six Emmy awards for the performance and won three — plus a Golden Globe.
Corby temporarily left the show after suffering a stroke in November 1976, though she later returned in a storyline where Esther herself recovering from a stroke. Corby continued to reprise the role in later Waltons reunion movies, making her final screen appearance in 1997's A Walton Easter.
The Wisconsin native had been a prolific television guest player going back to the early 1950s, with credits including I Love Lucy, Batman, and Dragnet, in addition to dozens of supporting roles in well-known movies like Babes in Toyland (1934) and It’s a Wonderful Life (1946).
She picked up an Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe for George Stevens’ I Remember Mama (1948) and went on to appear in such classics as Shane (1953), Sabrina (1954), and Vertigo (1958).
Having stayed largely out of the showbiz spotlight in her later years, Corby died in 1999 at the age of 87.

Will Geer (Zebulon Walton)

As mischievous, myth-making Grandpa Walton, Will Geer endeared viewers with his warm and relatable approach to the character. Zebulon’s love of storytelling was a major influence on John-Boy’s burgeoning literary career.

Geer was a celebrated theater actor who had been active in Communist Party circles since the 1930s. He was subsequently blacklisted in Hollywood in the 1950s after refusing, during testimony before the House Committee on Un-American Activities, to name people who had joined the Communist Party.
The character actor played none other than Wyatt Earp in Anthony Mann’s classic Winchester ’73 (1950) and went on to appear in classics like Seconds (1966), In Cold Blood (1967), and Jeremiah Johnson(1972).
Geer worked regularly in regional theater for decades before taking over the role of Zeb from Edgar Bergen, who originated the role in The Homecoming.
Geer was married to actress Herta Ware from 1934 until their divorce in 1954. They had three children together.
He died in 1978 at age 76 from respiratory failure.

Jon Walmsley (Jason Walton)

Jon Walmsley starred as Jason, the second-oldest Walton child who eventually goes off to fight in World War II before returning home and pursuing a career as a musician.
Much like his onscreen alter ego, Walmsley was a musician himself. He toured with Richard Marx in the 1980s and worked with a number of major artists over the ensuing decades, while taking on only occasional non-Waltons acting gigs.
Walmsley married Lisa Harrison, who played Jason's girlfriend Toni Hazleton, in 1979. The couple, who share one daughter, divorced in 2008. He now lives in England with his second wife, Marion.

Judy Norton (Mary Ellen Walton)

Judy Norton played tomboyish, self-sufficient Mary Ellen, who grows from a headstrong teenager into one of the mountain's most independent women, eventually pursuing a career in medicine.
“It truly is a family,” Norton told EW in 2016 of her onscreen kin. “I can get mad at them and know that we still love each other.”
The multitalented performer appeared several times on Battle of the Network Stars in the late '70s and early '80s, where she showed off her athletic prowess. An avid athlete, Norton has participated in competitive horse jumping and skydiving and has also played tennis and skied. She later guest-starred on The Love Boatand Stargate SG-1.
Norton, who has added numerous writing and directing credits to her résumé over the years, has been married to Robert Graves since 2002.

Eric Scott (Ben Walton)

Played by Eric Scott, Ben spends most of the series trying to differentiate himself from his many siblings, eventually maturing into a devoted father and businessman. While he may not be celebrated on the level of John-Boy and Jason, Ben grows into a reliable member of the family who helps run the Walton sawmill.
“I don’t think anybody expected that 50 years later people would still be talking about the show,” Scott said at The Hollywood Show in 2025. “I think there was authenticity in the relationships on the show that was real. I think that what people saw between us was real. Essentially when we were all together it was a great love story and people responded to that.”
As a child, the actor guested on shows including Bewitched,Lancer, Medical Center, and The Doris Day Show. He later appeared on The Fall Guy in 1985.
The Los Angeles native has largely left showbiz behind and now owns a delivery business.
Scott has been married to his wife, Cynthia Ullman Wolfen, since 2000. They share two children, and he also has a daughter from a previous marriage.

Mary Elizabeth McDonough (Erin Walton)

Much like her brother Ben, Erin (played by Mary Elizabeth McDonough) spends a good deal of the show trying to find her footing in the adult world. Over the course of the series and its reunion movies, she grows from an uncertain teenager into a professional with a strong sense of self.
Following her years on The Waltons, McDonough led the gloriously cheesy slasher Mortuary (1982), opposite Bill Paxton. In addition to returning for the franchise’s TV movies, she steadily kept working, with guest spots across TV, including ER, Diagnosis: Murder, Ally McBeal, The West Wing, and Will & Grace.
The veteran actress has been married to Don Couch since 2011.

David W. Harper (James Robert “Jim-Bob” Walton)

Fascinated by airplanes and mechanics as a child, David W. Harper’s Jim-Bob dreams of becoming a pilot before poor eyesight forces him to change course. He eventually becomes a mechanic and serves in the Army Air Corps.
Outside of Walton's Mountain, Harper's acting résumé remained relatively sparse, with appearances in Walking Tall: Final Chapter (1977), the 1982 miniseries The Blue and the Gray, and Fletch (1985).
Though he occasionally appears at Waltons-related reunions and conventions, Harper long ago stepped away from show business and has largely maintained a private life.

Kami Cotler (Elizabeth Walton)

Kami Cotler’s Elizabeth is the baby of the family — though much like her siblings, she deals with heartbreak and the confusion of youth before eventually leaving Walton's Mountain and striking out on her own.
Like her onscreen brother Jim-Bob, the majority of Cotler’s credits are Waltons-related. She appeared on an episode of Family Feud, where the cast of The Waltons faced off against the cast of The Dukes of Hazzard, and was a series regular on Garry Marshall and Thomas L. Miller's short-lived, grammatically wonky sitcom Me and the Chimp.
The Long Beach native returned as Elizabeth in all six reunion TV movies and later opened up in a 2010 documentary special.
Aside from her Hollywood forays, Cotler has built a career in education, working as a teacher, school administrator, and educational consultant.
